Anniversary Gifts for Your Partner, or for a Couple You Love
By the Giftruly editorsUpdated 20 hand-picked ideas
Two very different people end up shopping for anniversary gifts. One is buying for their own partner and wants something that says "still you, still us" without sliding into greeting-card territory. The other is buying for a couple: parents reaching their 40th, grandparents at 60 years, friends marking their first. The first gift is private and can be a little soppy. The second is public, often opened at a party, and has to honor two people at once.
This page covers both. It starts with a quick word on the traditional anniversary materials, then moves to gifts for your partner, plans for the two of you, gifts for a couple you love, ideas for the big milestone years, and a handful of small gestures for the anniversaries in between.
If you're shopping for your own partner and want more depth, our guides to anniversary gifts for your wife and for your husband go year by year, and anniversary gifts for her and for him suit couples who aren't married. For couples generally, see gifts for couples.

Paper, cotton, leather: do the traditions matter?
In the US, each anniversary year has a traditional material: paper for the first, cotton for the second, leather for the third, wood for the fifth, tin or aluminum for the tenth, crystal for the fifteenth, china for the twentieth, then silver at 25, pearl at 30, ruby at 40 and gold at 50. There's a modern list too, which swaps in things like clocks and diamonds. None of it is a rule. Plenty of happy couples have never heard of it.
Where the traditions help is as a creative prompt. "Something leather" narrows the whole internet down to a manageable shortlist and gives the gift a story. If that appeals, the year-by-year ideas on our anniversary gifts for wife, husband, her and him pages cover it in detail. If not, ignore the list and buy for the person; that's what the rest of this page does.
For your partner: gifts that hold your story
Between partners, the strongest anniversary gifts are rarely the most expensive. They're the ones that point at something only the two of you share: the ticket stub from the first date, the joke from the honeymoon, the first apartment with the broken radiator.
These give that history somewhere to live, and leave room for the years still to come.

Personalized Wedding Keepsake Box
~$40
A wooden box engraved with your names and wedding date, made for the small things you've been meaning to keep somewhere safe: cards, a pressed flower from the bouquet, the hotel key card from the honeymoon. The real gift is what you put inside before you hand it over. Add one new thing each anniversary and it becomes a running record of your marriage. For unmarried couples, engrave the date you met instead.
- 2
Love Letter Journal: A Year of Us
~$25
A guided journal with prompts for writing to each other through the year, passed back and forth or written in turns. It suits a couple who have drifted into talking mostly about schedules and groceries and would like to say the bigger things again. Fill in the first entry yourself before you give it, so it arrives as a letter rather than homework.
- 3
Linen Bed Sheet Set
~$160
Stonewashed linen sheets that get softer with every wash and stay cool on warm nights. It's a quietly romantic gift for the bed you share, and the sort of upgrade most couples talk about and never buy. Linen and cotton both appear on traditional anniversary lists, which gives you a tidy excuse. Double-check the mattress size and depth before ordering.
The first year: paper, and a lot of firsts
The first anniversary has its own small tradition, paper, and it happens to suit the year well. Newlyweds and new couples are usually short on money and space and long on plans, so a gift on paper that looks ahead is a good fit.
Friends buying for a couple at their first anniversary can use these too; they're personal without being private.

Custom Wedding Date Wall Art
~$40
A framed print with your names and wedding date, designed to hang in the first home you share. It ticks the paper box neatly and gives a new place a bit of personality. Keep the design simple and in colors that suit the room, because it'll likely be on the wall for a long time. For couples who aren't married, use the date of the first date instead.
- 5
Couples Bucket List Scratch-Off Poster
~$25
A poster of a hundred things to do together, from watching a sunrise to cooking a meal from another country, each one scratched off when done. It's a playful paper gift that turns the next few years into a shared project. Best for couples who like a bit of structure and a lot of adventure; homebodies may find half the list exhausting.
- 6
Cookbook for Two
~$20
Recipes scaled for two people, from weeknight dinners to a proper Saturday-night meal. For newlyweds still figuring out how to cook together without arguing over the stove, it's a practical first-anniversary gift that's still technically paper. Write a short inscription inside and promise to cook the first recipe on the night.
Plans for just the two of you
Some couples would trade any object for an uninterrupted evening together. These gifts come with the evening built in. Put a date in the calendar when you give them, or they'll wait in a cupboard until next year.

Two-Player Strategy Board Game
A game designed for exactly two people, usually done in under an hour. A good fit for couples who are competitive in a friendly way and prefer a night in.

A roll-up blanket with a waterproof base for lying out under the stars or at an outdoor concert. Pair it with a date when a meteor shower peaks.
Hikers & CampersScience Nerdscozy - 10~$230
Inflatable Two-Person Kayak
A packable kayak for two, no roof rack needed. A big, adventurous gift for an outdoorsy couple; buy life jackets too, and check where it can be launched.

For a couple you love
When the anniversary isn't yours, the gift has to work for two people who may have quite different tastes. The safe ground is the life they've built together: their home, their wedding day, the family that came after. Avoid anything that celebrates one more than the other.
If you're a grown child buying for your parents, you also have something nobody else does: access to old photos and the family stories. Use them.
- 11
Then and Now Anniversary Photo Frame
~$30
A double frame with one opening for their wedding photo and one for a picture of them today, often engraved with the two years. It's simple and very effective: the side-by-side does the talking, so it works for couples who'd squirm at a sentimental speech. Ask a sibling to quietly borrow the wedding photo, and choose a recent picture where both of them look like themselves.
- 12
Custom House Portrait Illustration
~$65
A watercolor-style drawing of the house they've lived in for years, made from a photo you send. For long-married parents it captures the place where so much of their marriage happened, and it becomes especially precious if they're thinking about downsizing. Take a straight-on photo of the house on a bright day, and allow a few weeks for the artist.
- 13
Engraved Champagne Flute Set
~$30
Two crystal flutes engraved with their names or the wedding date, for the toast at the anniversary dinner and every one after. It's a good gift from friends or siblings at a first or fifth anniversary, and it's easy to wrap and bring to a party. Ask for engraving that's subtle; small lettering ages better than big script.
Silver, ruby, gold: the milestone years
A 25th, 40th or 50th anniversary is usually a family event, often with a party and a gift from all the children together. The best gifts for these years are about the marriage as a whole: the people in it, the music, the moments nobody photographed properly at the time.
Start early. Collecting photos from relatives, scanning old prints and getting things printed takes longer than anyone expects.
- 14
Mail-In Photo and Video Digitizing Kit
~$90
A prepaid box you fill with old prints, slides or videotapes, including the wedding video if there is one, and send off to be digitized. The originals come back with digital copies, so the whole family can finally watch the wedding again. For a 40th or 50th, there may be no better gift. Read the service's handling and return terms, and label everything before it goes.
- 15
Personalized Photo Book
~$40
A printed hardcover book of their marriage in pictures, from the wedding through the kids and grandkids to last summer. It's the gift that will be passed around the table at the party and pulled off the shelf for years. Ask relatives for their photos early, and add short captions; the stories behind the pictures are half the value.
- 16
Custom Song Lyrics Wall Art
~$45
A framed print of the lyrics to their first-dance song, sometimes laid out as a soundwave or record. It works well for parents who still talk about their wedding band or have a song they always dance to at family weddings. Ask carefully if you don't know the song; one wrong guess and it's a very different gift.
Small gestures for the years in between
Not every anniversary needs a big production. In an ordinary year, a small thing done with care, plus dinner, is more than enough.
17.52 Reasons I Love You Card Deck ~$15
A deck you fill in with one reason per card. Inexpensive, slow to write and kept for years. Be specific; general compliments fall flat.
18.Love Coupon Book ~$12
Tear-out coupons for favors and dates. Fill the blank ones with things your partner actually wants, like a lie-in or a dinner they don't cook.
19.Matching Couples Mugs ~$25
A pair of mugs that sit together on the counter. An easy add-on to a card for couples who have morning coffee side by side.
20.Preserved Rose in Glass Dome ~$40
A real rose preserved under a glass dome, so it keeps its color for years. A romantic token for a partner who loves flowers but hates watching them wilt.

Getting an anniversary right
Decide first whether this is a private gift or a public one. A partner's gift can be personal and a little sentimental; a gift for a couple at a party should honor both of them equally.
Use the traditional materials if they help you think, and drop them if they don't. A wonderful gift in the wrong material beats a dull one in the right one.
For milestone years, coordinate with siblings and other relatives early so the couple gets one meaningful gift instead of six similar frames.
Book the dinner before you buy the present. Restaurants fill up on popular anniversary weekends, and the evening is often what they'll remember.
Need a few more ideas? Describe the couple or your partner to the gift finder, including the year you're celebrating, and you'll get a tailored shortlist.
Anniversary questions, answered
Which anniversary is paper, and which is silver or gold?
The best-known US list runs paper (1), cotton (2), leather (3), fruit or flowers (4), wood (5), tin or aluminum (10), crystal (15), china (20), silver (25), pearl (30), ruby (40) and gold (50). Our anniversary guides for wives and husbands go through the years in more detail.
What do you give your parents for their 50th anniversary?
Something that celebrates the whole marriage: a photo book of their 50 years, their wedding video digitized so the family can watch it, a then-and-now frame, or a box of notes from family and friends. A family dinner or party often matters more than any object.
Should we exchange gifts on every anniversary?
Many couples do something small most years and save bigger gifts for milestones. What matters is agreeing on it, so one of you isn't holding a carefully chosen present while the other has booked a table and called it done.
How much should I spend on an anniversary gift for a couple?
For friends or relatives, something in the $30 to $75 range is usual. For a parents' milestone anniversary, siblings often pool money for one larger gift or a celebration dinner.
