How to use it

    Hand it out with the invite

    Print one per person, or send the page link so everyone prints their own. Give a date to hand it back, a few days before the draw.

    Collect them face down

    Use a folder or a box. Once names are drawn, give each sheet to the person who drew its owner, folded, so nobody else reads it.

  3. 3

    Keep it short

    Nobody needs to fill in every line. Three honest answers and a “please, no” are worth more than a full page of “anything is fine”.

  4. 4

    Shred it after

    The sheets have people’s allergies and likes on them. Once the gifts are swapped, they go in the shredder.

Questions about the questionnaire

What should a Secret Santa questionnaire ask?

The things a stranger would need to buy a good small gift: coffee or tea, sweet or savory, allergies, favorite colors, hobbies, a shop they love, and, most useful of all, what they’d rather not get. This one has 16 questions for friends and family, 12 for work and 10 for kids, plus a bank of 36 more by theme.

How many questions should it have?

About 10 to 16. Fewer than 10 rarely gives the Santa enough to go on; more than 20 and people leave half of it blank. For work, 10 to 12 questions is plenty.

When should I hand it out?

With the invite, and ask for it back a few days before the draw. That way each Santa gets the sheet the day they get their name.

Is there a version for kids?

Yes. The kids version has 10 simple questions (favorite animal, what they love to play, a treat, and what they’d love within the budget), with a line for a grown-up to add allergies. It works for a classroom or a family with children.

Is the work version different?

Yes. It skips sizes and anything personal, and asks work-friendly things instead: your desk, what you always run out of, and whether you’ll open it at the office or at home.

Does it print on A4 and US Letter?

Yes. Pick the paper above before you print, or download the ready-made PDF for your paper size. The sheet fits on one page either way, in color or black and white.

Can people fill it in online?

Yes, two ways: type on the sheet above and print or save it as a PDF, or start a Giftruly Secret Santa group, where everyone adds their wishes on their phone and only their Santa sees them.

What if someone doesn’t fill it in?

Their Santa can still ask them questions anonymously in the group, or start from the gift guides for coworkers and friends. A good notebook or great coffee rarely goes wrong.
