There’s no obligation to give coworkers individual gifts, and many people never do. If your workplace has a gift exchange or a group card, joining in is usually enough. If you want to give something to the one or two people you work most closely with, $15 to $25 is the comfortable range for a peer: enough to feel considered, not so much that they feel they owe you. Spending noticeably more than everyone else tends to create awkwardness rather than goodwill.

Two other things are worth checking. Some companies, especially in government, healthcare, finance and anything client-facing, have written gift policies with low limits, so a quick look at the handbook saves trouble. And if you’re giving to one person in a small team, do it privately or include everyone; a gift handed over in front of three colleagues who got nothing makes the recipient the uncomfortable one.

Keep it about work life. Desk gear, food and drink and small comforts are safe; clothing, fragrance, jewelry and anything for the body are not.
Don’t assume alcohol. Plenty of people don’t drink, for reasons that are none of the office’s business. If you want to give a bottle, be certain.
Match the room. If your team gives modest gifts, stay modest. Outspending everyone makes the other givers feel cheap and the recipient feel awkward.
Add a few handwritten lines. A specific note ("thanks for untangling the March report") often means more to a colleague than the gift.
