Almost every residence hall publishes a list of prohibited items, and it’s worth five minutes before you shop. Candles and incense are banned nearly everywhere, sometimes even unlit, and so are open-coil appliances like hot plates, toaster ovens and space heaters. Many schools also restrict extension cords that aren’t surge-protected, halogen lamps and some kinds of string lights. Electric kettles, coffee makers and rice cookers fall into a gray area that varies from school to school, and mini fridges and microwaves often come with size or wattage limits.

The rules exist mostly because of fire risk in buildings full of tired people, and students who break them can be fined or have things confiscated. So skip the pretty candle set, however much they’d love it, and check the housing page for anything that plugs in. Most schools spell out exactly what’s allowed. Off-campus apartments are a different story; there, a candle is fine, and a fire extinguisher makes a smart companion gift.
